Create A Custom Button In Next.js

We’re going to walk you through how to create a custom button in Next.js. This article will help you abstract the button so that you’re not copy pasting the core code everywhere throughout your application. This helps with application organization which might not be a huge problem when your application is tiny. But it’ll be super useful once you start having hundreds of instances of your button. Ideally they all feel and behave similarly.

Still new to JS and struggling with the fundamentals? Check out Javascript: The Defenitive Guide (paid link) to brush up.

My Setup

  • Python 3.x
  • MacBook Pro (paid link) – Link is to the 2023 MacBook with an m2 chip, I have the m1 with similar specs.
  • Webstorm

Environment Setup

  1. I’ll be using Webstorm “New Project” workflow to scaffold my application. It looks like the following.

Keep in mind you can’t use Capital letters in your project name.

2. Once you click “create” the next CLI will have a couple of questions. It’ll look like the following:

The only non default was my Typescript option. So this piece is a lot of smooshing enter.

3. Your project is scaffolded out now. Let’s get the default application running. From within the project directory run npm install. The output will look like:

4. Next, run npm run dev. The output looks like:

I have two applications running locally so your CLI will probably point you towards http://localhost:3000.

The default application looks like the following:

Create a Custom Button in Next.js

File and Folder Creation

Now that you’ve scaffolded out your Next.js application and have it running locally we can focus on abstracting a button or making yourself a custom button. Let’s make a new directory to house all of our custom components.

  1. Right click the root of your project and hover over “new” –> directory.

2. Then name your new directory “components.”

3. Within your components directory, make a CustomButton folder, and within that folder make an index.js file. Your file tree will look like:

There are additional files and additional directories that aren’t shown in the photo above.

Let’s abstract existing buttons in the application. The goal will be to make the Docs, Learn, and Deploy buttons dynamic.

Next.js Button Code

ctrl+f’ing “Templates” should take you to where the button is defined. We’re looking to cleanup the default code and make the buttons more re-usable. Here’s what’s in my page.js file.

import Image from 'next/image'

export default function Home() {
  return (

          </p>
        </a>
      </div>
    </main>
  )
}

The buttons are specifically defined here:

 <a
          href="https://vercel.com/new?utm_source=create-next-app&utm_medium=appdir-template&utm_campaign=create-next-app"
          className="group rounded-lg border border-transparent px-5 py-4 transition-colors hover:border-gray-300 hover:bg-gray-100 hover:dark:border-neutral-700 hover:dark:bg-neutral-800/30"
          target="_blank"
          rel="noopener noreferrer"
        >
          <h2 className={`mb-3 text-2xl font-semibold`}>
            Deploy{' '}
            <span className="inline-block transition-transform group-hover:translate-x-1 motion-reduce:transform-none">
              -&gt;
            </span>
          </h2>
          <p className={`m-0 max-w-[30ch] text-sm opacity-50`}>
            Instantly deploy your Next.js site to a shareable URL with Vercel.
          </p>
        </a>

So, within our empty CustomButton/index.js file let’s define a function.

const CustomButton = () => {
return(
<>

</>)
}

export default CustomButton;

This function returns nothing at the moment. It also doesn’t take in any props at the moment. Let’s copy+paste button code into the function. This will now look like:

const CustomButton = () => {
return(
<>
<a
          href="https://vercel.com/new?utm_source=create-next-app&utm_medium=appdir-template&utm_campaign=create-next-app"
          className="group rounded-lg border border-transparent px-5 py-4 transition-colors hover:border-gray-300 hover:bg-gray-100 hover:dark:border-neutral-700 hover:dark:bg-neutral-800/30"
          target="_blank"
          rel="noopener noreferrer"
        >
          <h2 className={`mb-3 text-2xl font-semibold`}>
            Deploy{' '}
            <span className="inline-block transition-transform group-hover:translate-x-1 motion-reduce:transform-none">
              -&gt;
            </span>
          </h2>
          <p className={`m-0 max-w-[30ch] text-sm opacity-50`}>
            Instantly deploy your Next.js site to a shareable URL with Vercel.
          </p>
        </a>
</>)
}

export default CustomButton;

The button above isn’t dynamic and isn’t very useful. We’re going to make it dynamic with props. Props can be defined as input into our function. We’re going to want a description, a button title, and a url or path to go to. That should cover all button metadata and make this super recyclable.

const CustomButton = ({link, title, description}) => {
    return (
        <>
            <a
                href={url}
                className="group rounded-lg border border-transparent px-5 py-4 transition-colors hover:border-gray-300 hover:bg-gray-100 hover:dark:border-neutral-700 hover:dark:bg-neutral-800/30"
                target="_blank"
                rel="noopener noreferrer"
            >
                <h2 className={`mb-3 text-2xl font-semibold`}>
                    {title}{' '}
                    <span
                        className="inline-block transition-transform group-hover:translate-x-1 motion-reduce:transform-none">
              -&gt;
            </span>
                </h2>
                <p className={`m-0 max-w-[30ch] text-sm opacity-50`}>
                    {description}
                </p>
            </a>
        </>)
}

export default CustomButton;

Now, we can go ahead and replace our original buttons with this abstracted version that we created above. Our new page.js file looks like:

import Image from 'next/image'
import CustomButton from "@/components/CustomButton";

export default function Home() {
    return (
        <main className="flex min-h-screen flex-col items-center justify-between p-24">
            <div className="z-10 w-full max-w-5xl items-center justify-between font-mono text-sm lg:flex">

                    <code className="font-mono font-bold">app/page.js</code>
                </p>
                <div

                        target="_blank"

            </div>
        </main>
    )
}

We only simplified the button section which looks like:

            <div className="mb-32 grid text-center lg:mb-0 lg:grid-cols-4 lg:text-left">
                <CustomButton title={"Docs"} description={"Find in-depth information about Next.js features and API."}

                <CustomButton title={"Learn"}
                              description={"Learn about Next.js in an interactive course with&nbsp;quizzes!"}
                              url={"https://nextjs.org/learn?utm_source=create-next-app&utm_medium=appdir-template-tw&utm_campaign=create-next-app"}/>
                <CustomButton title={"Templates"} description={"Explore the Next.js 13 playground."}
                              url={"https://vercel.com/templates?framework=next.js&utm_source=create-next-app&utm_medium=appdir-template&utm_campaign=create-next-app"}/>
                <CustomButton title={"Deploy"}
                              description={"Instantly deploy your Next.js site to a shareable URL with Vercel."}
                              url={"https://vercel.com/new?utm_source=create-next-app&utm_medium=appdir-template&utm_campaign=create-next-app"}/>
            </div>

There should be no visual difference to what the sample application looked like before and after our changes. Implementation of the buttons should be much easier when moving forward with dev though. Interested in adding a background image to your application? Check out this blog post.
